The regional project "Institutional Consolidation for the Coordinated and Integrated
Monitoring of Natural Resources towards Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation in the Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalaya Mountain Complex" (also known as HKKH Partnership Project) aims at consolidation of institutional capacity for systematic planning and management at the local, national and regional levels. The project, supported by the Italian Cooperation, is implemented by IUCN in partnership with CESVI, Ev-K2-CNR and ICIMOD.

One of the key activities of the project is the development of tools and methodologies to support the sustainable management of ecosystems in mountain areas. Based on the most advanced experiences in ecosystem management, the project is integrating participatory techniques and science-based computer modeling to address the needs of different stakeholders involved in the management process, from government structures and park management to local communities and business sector. These tools and methodologies, developed involving key stakeholders, will evolve in modular Decision Support Toolbox for ecosystem management.

Two key events focused on Sagarmatha National Park and its buffer zone have been organized. A Scenario Planning workshop was held in Dhulikhel, Bhaktapur, from March 23-25, 2007, to explore future scenarios for tourism development with participatory techniques, involving a wide range of stakeholders from tourism industry, government, local communities, development and research organizations. The workshop, organized by CESVI in collaboration with other project partners, was facilitated by Giuseppe Daconto and Dr. Lhakpa Norbu Sherpa. This event has seen a very active involvement of stakeholders and has been an important milestone in stimulating dialogue and reflection on long-term perspectives and challenges such as the development of quality tourism and addressing climate change issues.

Similarly, a workshop on “System Dynamics modeling for Ecosystem Management” focused on computer modeling was organized by ICIMOD from March 27-29, 2007, in collaboration with other partners. Targeted to a technical audience, the workshop has gathered national and international researchers, park managers, government, NGOs as well as technical representatives from the project partners.

The workshop contributed to furthering the development of an inter-disciplinary network of researchers and modelers that will be involved in a collaborative process of developing a socio-ecosystem model of Sagarmatha National Park and its buffer zone. This model will support key stakeholders in the process of making informed decisions on the management of natural resources, simulating the behaviour of socio-ecosystem and exploring the effect of alternative management options.

The HKKH Partnership is a multi scale initiative, active at regional, national and local levels with a special focus on three protected areas: Sagarmatha National Park (Nepal), Central Karakoram National Park (Pakistan) and Qomolongma Nature Preserve in Tibet Autonomous Region (China).
