Workshop to Review the 1988 National Conservation Strategy
6 Jan 2012
A workshop titled "Consultative Workshop on a Review of National Conservation Strategy of Nepal” was jointly organized by National Planning Commission - Government of Nepal and IUCN Nepal. The main objective of the workshop was to focus on reviewing the current National Conservation Strategy (NCS) and to discuss the NCS in the light of the changed national and international contexts.
Additionally, the workshop would provide an opportunity for government, non government, civil society and community organizations, the private sector and development partners and others to provide their suggestions and feedbacks for the development and betterment of a revised/new strategy. This in turn would build on the present strengths and achievements, address the gaps in the existing strategy, and also respond positively to the new/ emerging conservation and development challenges and opportunities in Nepal.

The revised/new NCS would take into account the national developments, and resulting actions over the years associated with the use of natural resources, the socio-economic changes at the international level which do have significant implications for Nepal’s nature conservation policy.
The 1988 strategy was developed under the coordination of the National Planning Commission (NPC) and with technical support from IUCN. The Strategy laid the foundation for conservation conscious development policies, strategies, programs, plans and projects. Many aspects of the Strategy are still relevant today. However, with significant changes over the last two decades in political, social, economical, natural and physical aspects of the country, the need for reviewing the 1988 National Conservation Strategy (NCS) had become a must.
