SDC continues support to IUCN Nepal
15 December 2006
Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has continued its support to IUCN Nepal to carry out its existing field projects and undertake work in new programme areas to promote biodiversity conservation, environmental justice and sustainable livelihoods in Nepal.
In this regard, SDC has committed for three years support to IUCN Nepal that primarily covers five thematic programme areas, viz, environmental governance, ecosystem management, environmental economics, climate change and conservation learning - a natural progression from the previous phase.
IUCN Nepal’s current programme (2002–2006) has successfully focused on the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, conservation of Ilam Siwaliks, conservation of rhododendron forests in Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale, and promotion of Non-Timber Forest Products in Doti District.
An agreement to this effect was signed at Lalitpur today by Joerg Frieden, Country Director on behalf of SDC, and Mr. Prabhu Budhathoki, Country Representative, on behalf of IUCN Nepal.
SDC has been a major supporter of IUCN Nepal. IUCN has been supporting environmental conservation in Nepal since 1985 with SDC support. This has included the development and implementation of the National Conservation Strategy, development of environmental policy and regulatory instruments, promotion of environmental awareness and education, and capacity building of government and non-governmental organisations.
The Government of Switzerland has been supporting Nepal since early 1950s aimed at alleviating poverty through various programmatic interventions.
