Dr. Arzoo R. Deuba nominated as CEC Nepal Focal Point
28 November 2007

Dr. Arzoo Rana Deuba has been nominated as the focal point of IUCN’s Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) Nepal.

As IUCN Nepal continues to expand its membership base, engages with new sectors, and addresses emerging issues, Dr. Deuba’s nomination portrays the confidence of IUCN CEC members in her abilities to increase the relevance of IUCN's works in Nepal.

“Educating the people about nature conservation is everybody’s business. We will succeed if we continue to broaden our scope and involve more people,” said Dr. Deuba. “I would like see that each and every individual becomes more conscious about environmental protection; we must imbue it in our practices and personalities,” she continued.

The nomination of Dr. Deuba is of particular importance in ensuring that the CEC network gathers, synthesises and disseminates state-of-the-art knowledge and information for use in the Union’s education and communication work for biodiversity conservation in Nepal and beyond.

Dr. Deuba has pioneered the issues of violence against women and safe motherhood in Nepal. A well-known advocate for social issues in Nepal, Dr. Deuba's career has been broad-based, and she has actively contributed to multi-sectoral issues such as governance, forestry, soil conservation, energy, migration, poverty alleviation, and reproductive health.

She has to her credit the establishment of two well-known NGOs–SAATHI (working on child and women’s rights) and RUWDUC (Rural Women’s Development and Unity Center–working on health, sustainable development, peace building and mediation). Dr. Deuba has also established SAMANATA–a private sector consultancy operated solely by Nepali women, and is the president of Safe Motherhood Network Federation of Nepal.

Dr. Deuba serves on a number of boards. She is a board member of the Poverty Alleviation Fund of Nepal. Dr. Deuba has a Ph.D in organizational behaviour and consults for a number of international and government agencies in Nepal.
