Supporting nature through art
6 July 2007
The world of art has always played a critical role in inspiring thoughts and generating conservation education and awareness. This was echoed at an inaugural function of “Nature’s Call: An Art Exhibition of the Natural World through Artists’ Eyes” in Kathmandu yesterday.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Mr. Prabhu Budhathoki, Country Representative of IUCN Nepal, said that IUCN’s Art for Conservation Initiative aims to generate environmental awareness using the universal language of art as a catalyst for individuals, communities and leaders to focus on the importance of nature in preserving the environment.
“This innovative initiative tries to link creative expression, visual and performing arts with environmental awareness, and is designed to inspire people to observe, understand and protect the natural and human communities we share, as well as to foster awareness and a connection to our environment,” Mr. Budhathoki added.
The exhibition, inaugurated by Danish Ambassador to Nepal His Excellency Mr. Finn Thilsted, was organised to support conservation of wildlife and habitats, biodiversity, sustainability and environmental education through nature art, and to build a community of artists who share a common interest in nature art and nature conservation while promoting the conservation of the natural world through art, education and special initiatives. The week-long exhibition, featuring works of nature art created by 11 renowned contemporary artists of Nepal, has been put on display at Nepal Art Council, and highlights the real picture of nature combining wildlife, people, culture and landscape of Chitwan National Park in Nepal.
